Abstract
This paper examines the nexus between government responses towards the COVID-19 pandemic and the performance of economic activities. The study pooled daily data from 74 countries across five regions based on World Bank classification from March 22, 2020, to July 31, 2020. The study employs Autoregressive Distributed Lagged (ARDL) model. This study estimates Dynamic Fixed Effect (DFE), Mean Group (MG) and Pooled Mean Group (PMG) models based on error correction using STATA 15 to analyze the panel data. Our major empirical findings confirmed previous empirical results. The study finds that, in long run and short run, there is divergent impact of daily confirmed cases of COVID-19 and government containment measures on economic activities across regions: East Asia and Pacific region, Europe and Central Asia Latin, America and the Caribbean region, Middle East and North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. The economies of these regions respond differently to government containment measures towards curbing and cushion the spread of the pandemic. The study concludes that, the relationship between government responses towards the COVID-19 pandemic and economic activities is a function of individual region unique characteristics across of the world.
