Abstract
Nigeria's energy reserves and its large consumer-based population have particularly attracted China's attention. China's rapid economic growth and its need for energy reserves as well as an outlet for raw materials and finished products is a defining attribute of its relations; and the reason it broadens its investment activities with African countries like Nigeria to meet domestic demand and remain competitive in the global market. This paper examines Sino-Nigeria relations since the fourth republic. The paper is divided into five epochs, pre- fourth republic, the Obasanjo era, the Yardua era, the Jonathan era, and Buhari’s era. The findings show that all administration since 1999 has had smooth relations with the communist government in China. Buhari’s administration took a step further from pure economic relations to a political one by Taiwan moving its de facto embassy, a trade office, from Abuja to Lagos. It also asked Taiwan to change its name from Trade Mission of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Nigeria to the Taipei Trade Office in Nigeria and reduce staff. These give credence to reliance on the administration on Chinese aid.
