Sustainable Banking Model in the context of Sustainable Development Funding Gap Online First

Abstract

This paper critiques the prevailing business case sustainability model in sustainable banking, identifying its shortcomings in achieving meaningful sustainable development. It proposes an impact-optimizing sustainable banking model aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing a strategic shift from profit-centric to impact-centric practices. Using the Business Model Canvas framework, the paper delineates strategies for enhancing banks' contributions to sustainable development by addressing planning, resource mobilization, and value processing gaps. The proposed model integrates sustainability into core banking operations, promoting proactive, significant, and effective sustainability efforts that maximize positive contributions to the real economy.
